What to Expect at Your First Visit to NoVA Gonstead Chiropractic

If you have never visited a chiropractor before, you may wonder what will happen during your first appointment. You may also have questions about whether you will receive an adjustment right away, whether X-rays are necessary, and how a Gonstead chiropractor evaluates your spine.

At NoVA Gonstead Chiropractic in Fairfax, Virginia, our goal is to make your first visit informative, comfortable, and focused on understanding your individual condition.

Because the Gonstead System emphasizes a detailed examination before chiropractic care, your first visit is designed to help us understand how your spine and nervous system are functioning and whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you.

1. Consultation and Health History

Your first visit begins with a consultation.

We will discuss your current symptoms, when they started, activities or injuries that may have contributed to the problem, and how your condition affects your daily activities.

We may also ask about previous injuries, surgeries, medical history, previous chiropractic care, and other relevant health information.

This conversation is important because pain is not always caused by the area where you feel it.

For example, someone experiencing leg pain may have a problem involving the lower back. Similarly, shoulder discomfort may sometimes be associated with changes in spinal or pelvic mechanics.

Understanding your history helps us determine what areas need to be examined more carefully.

2. A Detailed Gonstead Examination

The examination is an important part of the Gonstead approach.

Rather than simply treating the location of your pain, we evaluate the spine and surrounding structures to identify areas that may be affecting normal spinal function.

The Gonstead examination may include several components, such as:

  • Instrumentation
  • Static palpation
  • Motion palpation
  • Visualization
  • X-ray analysis when clinically appropriate

These examination procedures help us gather information about spinal alignment, motion, tenderness, muscle tension, and other findings.

The purpose is to develop a more complete picture of your condition before determining an appropriate approach to care.

3. X-Rays When Clinically Appropriate

Depending on your history and examination findings, X-rays may be recommended.

X-rays can provide additional information about the structure of the spine, including alignment, degeneration, abnormal curvature, and other structural findings that may be relevant to your care.

Not every patient necessarily requires the same type of imaging. When imaging is appropriate, we use the information together with your history and physical examination rather than relying on an X-ray alone.

4. Gonstead Analysis

After gathering the necessary information, we analyze the examination findings.

The Gonstead System uses several examination procedures to identify areas of the spine that may require particular attention.

Our approach is not simply:

“Where does it hurt?”

Instead, we look at your history, examination findings, spinal mechanics, and other relevant information to determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.

This individualized analysis is one of the important differences between a focused Gonstead approach and a generalized approach to chiropractic care.

5. Review of Your Examination and X-Rays

After your first visit, Dr. Kang carefully reviews the information gathered during your consultation, examination, and any X-rays that were taken.

Because the Gonstead System involves a detailed examination and analysis, we take the time to review your findings carefully rather than rushing through the process.

In most cases, your Report of Findings will be scheduled for the following visit. This gives Dr. Kang time to thoroughly review your X-rays and examination results and prepare a more individualized explanation of your condition.

During your Report of Findings, we will discuss:

  • The important findings from your examination
  • Relevant X-ray findings
  • How the findings may relate to your symptoms
  • Areas of the spine that may require attention
  • Whether chiropractic care may be appropriate
  • The recommended approach to care
  • Any questions or concerns you may have

Our goal is for you to understand what we found and why a particular approach may be recommended before beginning a longer course of care.

6. What If I Have Severe or Acute Pain?

If you are experiencing significant or acute pain, we understand that waiting until the next visit may not always be appropriate.

When the examination indicates that an adjustment may be appropriate, an adjustment may be performed during the first visit when clinically appropriate.

In these situations, Dr. Kang may also review the findings with you and provide a Report of Findings on the same day when appropriate.

For most patients, however, we prefer to schedule the Report of Findings for the next visit so that we have adequate time to carefully review the examination and X-ray findings.

7. Will I Receive an Adjustment on My First Visit?

Not necessarily.

The first visit is primarily focused on understanding your condition through consultation, examination, and, when appropriate, X-ray analysis.

If you are experiencing acute or significant pain and the examination indicates that an adjustment is appropriate, care may begin during the first visit.

For other patients, the adjustment may begin after the examination and Report of Findings have been completed.

This approach allows us to make decisions based on your individual examination findings rather than automatically providing the same treatment to every patient.

8. Why We Take Time to Review Your Findings

At NoVA Gonstead Chiropractic, we believe that careful analysis is an important part of the Gonstead approach.

Your X-rays and examination findings provide information that deserves careful review. Taking additional time between the initial examination and the Report of Findings allows Dr. Kang to study the findings and prepare a more thorough explanation for you.

Our goal is not simply to identify where you hurt. We want to understand the examination findings and explain them clearly so you can make an informed decision about your care.

9. What Should I Wear?

You generally do not need special clothing for a chiropractic examination.

However, comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily is recommended.

If you are coming directly from work or another activity, there is usually no need to change clothes.

10. What Should I Bring to My First Visit?

If you have relevant medical records, previous X-rays, MRI reports, or other imaging studies, you may bring them with you.

It is also helpful to provide information about:

  • Previous injuries or accidents
  • Previous surgeries
  • Previous chiropractic or physical therapy care
  • Current medications, when relevant
  • Previous diagnostic imaging
  • The location and duration of your symptoms

The more information we have about your history, the better we can understand your situation.

11. What Happens After the First Visit?

After your examination and review of the findings, we will explain the recommended next steps.

Every patient is different. The frequency and duration of care can vary depending on the nature of the problem, how long it has been present, examination findings, and how you respond to care.

Our goal is to provide care based on your individual condition rather than using exactly the same approach for every patient.

Chiropractic Care Focused on the Individual

At NoVA Gonstead Chiropractic, we believe that a careful examination is an important part of responsible chiropractic care.

As a Gonstead chiropractor in Fairfax, VA, Dr. Kang uses the Gonstead System to evaluate the spine and identify areas that may require specific attention.

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we focus on understanding each patient's history, examination findings, and individual needs.

If you are experiencing back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, disc problems, joint pain, posture-related problems, or other musculoskeletal concerns, a thorough examination can be an important first step in understanding your condition.
